A thank you note from The Shelter for Abused Women and Children. Please visit their website and help in any way you can -
I just wanted to thank you for sharing your book with the Shelter. The Youth Development Advocate read the story to the children before Tropical Storm Bonnie to help the children understand. The children went from being fearful to wanting to help the shelter prepare. Some of the children were actually disappointed that we didn’t get much of a storm! We will share this story before every storm, as we have new children all the time.

Today, I had an opportunity to speak with some children about hurricanes. When I ask, "What is a hurricane?" This sweet, little girl said in her cutest voice, "It is scarey..." As for preparation, one of the boys said, " picking up things around the house"
and "getting food and things we need.." They all said there's wind and rain, and so on. A hurricane is definitely a scarey prospect for all of us, but most of all, for the little ones. They should be adequately prepared. One excellent way is by reading to them or having them read TIME TO GET READY....A Hurricane is Coming to Our Town by Jill Klaskin Press. In a most colorful and interesting manner they will learn and know the importance of hurricane preparedness.

Below is an excerpt:
Start preparing the little ones for a hurricane. How about that? They should understand, first of all, that during this time of year hurricanes form in the Atlantic and we have to prepare for such an event. One such book that children ages 4 - 8 would not only enjoy but learn lots on how to prepare for a hurricane was recently published. This book is a must read Time to Get Ready... A Hurricane is Coming to Our Town by Jill Klaskin Press. You'll be finding out more about this book soon. It is better to prepare them gently with time than to wait until a hurricane is on the way, everyone is nervous, and the children are not properly prepared to handle the situation. So, thank God for this quiet time. Let's use it well.

When a natural disaster strikes, what is the effect on children? Jill Klaskin Press shows adults how to prepare children for a hurricane. When Mia and Jonathan hear about the approaching weather, they are excited, expecting to experience a special event. They are eager to enjoy the storm. The phenomena of hurricanes is explained through vibrant illustrations
Mia’s and Jonathan’s mother talks to them seriously and the whole family works together to prepare for safety. They stockpile food and water, flashlights and batteries, and a portable radio.
Outside they work to secure bikes and outdoor furniture. Their parents include the children in sleeping arrangements, in playing games and in all the preparations needed for the special time. The family comes through protected, but the tree house is destroyed. This offers an opportunity to work in a positive way with neighbors to recover after a storm.
The author presented a disaster in a non-threatening way. She walks a fine line between showing respect for a dangerous situation and information that will keep the family safe – even the dog.

Its a wonderful idea. Anytime you can make hurricanes easier for kids to
understand as well as how to prepare for their arrival, its a great
undertaking.

Time to get ready is a short story for young children to learn what to do in case a hurricane comes to town. It also shows the damage a hurricane can do and how important it is for a community to come together and help each other.
If you are a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or even a daycare provider, this is a book you should have on your child’s bookcase, even if you live in a place that doesn't have hurricanes. Everyone young and old needs to know what to do during a bad storm.
ENCOURAGES QUESTIONS, NOT FEARS....VERY HELPFUL!, By Teresa Vivero - Time to Get Ready... A Hurricane is Coming to our Town! (Paperback) A good way to gently give your kids an idea about what they might experience if a hurricane heads to your area. Very helpful in explaining the process of preparation, passage of a storm and post-hurricane recovery in an educational and non-scary manner. Parents and educators living in potential hurricane-affected areas will find this book a great resource. My kids (ages 7 and 9) both enjoyed it and it helped us start a discussion with them about hurricanes and other natural disasters.
Time to Get Ready... A Hurricane is Coming to our Town! (Paperback) I don't live in the Southeast where there is a real concern about hurricane season. That's not to say we don't get hurricanes in the Northeast, and we've had some bad ones that caused a lot of damage. "Time to Get Ready...A Hurricane is Coming to our Town" by Jill Klaskin Press isn't just for calming children who are expecting hurricanes. There are natural disasters everywhere. We need to explain to our children that there are things we can do to keep ourselves safe and reasonably comfortable, even if that means going elsewhere in some cases. Children also need to know that when the storm is over, there may be a lot of cleaning up, but that their lives will return to normal. This book addresses all those issues and more.
Children don't always ask questions about things that worry them. "Time to Get Ready..." helped me start several important conversations with my grandchildren. I hope the conversations continue. My thanks to Jill Klaskin Press for giving us a wonderful little book that tackles a big subject.

I thought this book was very well written for young children. I like the illustratiuons too.
As previous reviews said, it encourages children to ask questions and to find ways they can help prepare for an approaching storm.
I live in the Caribbean where we experience hurricanes often and I think this would be a valuable book for parents to have to help their children understand and experience hurricanes.
